Purpose
This qualification is for apprentices undertaking the Hair Professional (Barbering) Apprenticeship Standard. On completion of this qualification the apprentice will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut mens hair using barbering techniques, style and finish mens hair, cut facial hair into shape and provide shaving services for men.
The apprentice will be able to work with all hair types ranging from straight hair to very curly, wiry hair. The apprentice will also be able to carry out consultations with clients, demonstrate the professionalism, values, behaviours, communication skills and safe working practices associated with the role and be able to work without supervision to a high level of precision, with exceptional client care skills.
Content
Apprentices must achieve all six mandatory units which include:
• Consultation
• Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
• Cutting hair using barbering techniques to create a variety of looks
• Style and finish men’s hair
• Cut facial hair into shape
• Shaving services
Apprentices will develop the following transferable skills which are embedded across the units:
• Behaviours and communication
• Safe working practices
• Professionalism and values
Completion
On completion of all mandatory units and Multiple Choice Questions the apprentice will be able to claim for a Certificate of Unit Achievement. This can be used as evidence of achievement and once additional gateway requirements have been completed the End-point Assessment will need to be carried out.
A full qualification certificate will be issued once the apprentice has achieved the End-point Assessment along with a Final Grade of a Pass or Distinction.
Criteria for entry
No formal qualifications are required to access the course, no prior knowledge is required.
• A passion for Barbering with a willingness to learn and practice the skills.
• Minimum of 4 hours a week training / working on mens hair in salon.
• Minimum of twelve to maximum of fifteen months duration dependant on ability
Additional Informaton
There is no employer National Insurance contribution for under 25’s when using apprenticeships to train up new recruits and existing staff. The apprentice just needs to be under 25 and paid less than £967 per week. If the apprentice tuns 25 during the apprenticeship then NI will have to be paid.
Any individual can progress onto the Barbering Apprenticeship after completing the Hair Professional or the Advanced and Creative Hair Professional. And, if you recruit an apprentice aged 16-18, you are also eligible to receive a £1,000 grant.
